Nvidia RTX 5090 launch causes major stock crisis

Nvidia’s next-generation graphics card , the RTX 5090 , was released on January 30, 2025, with a price tag of $1,999 abroad. However, the launch of this model, which was in high demand worldwide , did not happen as users expected. In many technology stores, the stock of the card was either very limited or completely sold out. In some branches of Micro Center, one of the leading retail chains in the US, RTX 5090 cards were completely absent, while some branches were only able to stock a few cards. This situation created great disappointment among users who waited in front of the store for days to get the card.On the other hand, Nvidia’s stock shortage warning before the launch was a sign of the problems. Reddit users, especially in the US, tracked the stock in Micro Center branches and showed the seriousness of the situation. It was reported that the most stock reached the Micro Center branch in Tustin, California. However, stocks in many stores remained below ten units. Some users waiting in front of the stores on the morning of the launch day had to leave with only the queue tickets given to them due to the lack of stock.

There are complaints from consumers about the stock crisis

One Reddit user noted that he was able to purchase an RTX 5090 card by waiting in line at the Micro Center store in Miami for three days. Other users shared their experiences by sharing similar photos of their receipts from the stores. However, the vast majority said they were unable to obtain the card on launch day due to stock issues. Nvidia’s RTX 5080, while slightly more readily available, still sold out quickly on platforms like Best Buy and Amazon. However, fewer complaints were raised during the card’s sales period.Major PC manufacturers that sell pre-configured systems have also been hit by the stock crisis. According to Gamers Nexus, a leading US system integrator was able to receive only one RTX 5090 on launch day. Another manufacturer did not receive any cards at all, while a third company quickly sold 20 RTX 5090s in pre-configured systems. These systems sold out in minutes, but did not meet user expectations, and many people had to wait a long time for stock to be replenished. The high demand and insufficient supply naturally led to the emergence of opportunists. RTX 5090 graphics cards were offered for sale on platforms like Ebay at prices well above the launch price. While some sellers were pricing the cards up to $5,000, YouTuber JayzTwoCents announced that a card he signed was on sale for $5,800 on Facebook. The fact that this situation could not be controlled despite Nvidia’s warning led to further backlash among users.Retailers are now offering only pre-order options due to the shortages. A UK-based tech store called Scan announced that some cards will only be in stock at the end of May. This means a long wait of four months for those who want to buy the RTX 5090. Thus, the supply-demand imbalance in the graphics card market has paved the way for speculative price increases in the market.Considering the technical specifications and performance of the RTX 5090, this graphics card is especially targeted at users who want to improve their 4K gaming experience. However, stock issues make it difficult for many people to access this new-generation card. How Nvidia will manage its stock supply in the coming months is being followed with curiosity in the technology world.Nvidia has declined to respond to requests for comment on the matter. The company has not shared any new information beyond the stock shortage statement it made ahead of the launch. Despite this, user complaints about stock issues continue unabated on social media platforms and technology forums. Experts point out that Nvidia needs to improve its supply chain processes to prevent similar problems from occurring in future card launches.
