PS5 Pro takes new horizons with high-performance GPU and machine learning

Sony’s “PlayStation 5 Pro (PS5 Pro)” has been officially announced to be released on November 7, 2024. What is attracting attention is the machine learning technology called “PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR)” that will be installed in the machine.

The GPU installed in the PS5 Pro has 67% more compute units than the current PS5. GPU memory is also 28% faster. This increases the rendering speed during gameplay by up to 45%, allowing for a smoother playing experience.

In addition, ray tracing technology has also evolved significantly. More dynamic light reflection and refraction can now be expressed, and light rays can be cast at two or even three times the speed of the current PS5. The

PS5 Pro also supports the latest wireless communication technology, Wi-Fi 7, VRR (variable refresh rate), and 8K gameplay, preparing for the next generation of communication environments. In addition, the “PS5 Pro Game Boost” function may stabilize or improve the performance of over 8,500 PS5 and PS4 titles, and some PS4 titles will enjoy enhanced visual expression.

Expectations for the next generation of consoles and issues with current consoles

Following the announcement of the PS5 Pro, the eyes of the gaming industry are already turning to the next generation. Sony’s “PlayStation 6 (PS6)” and Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox (tentative name) are expected to be released after 2028, and both companies are expected to aim for “the biggest technological leap ever” using machine learning technology.

Members of Digital Foundry, a technology group known for analyzing game footage, point out that technologies such as PSSR in the PS5 Pro and NVIDIA DLSS are signs of further evolution in the next generation of consoles. In the future, a wide range of applications are expected, such as improving the quality of materials and textures and geometry processing, and the possibility that the PS6 and next-generation Xbox will achieve true 4K resolution and 60fps is increasing. Meanwhile

, doubts have been cast on the pre-release advertising slogans of the current PS5 and Xbox Series X. Both machines boasted 4K/60fps, but Digital Foundry pointed out that this was “hyped.” To meet this number, it is necessary to drop the visuals to the level of the previous generation machine.

The main cause is insufficient processing power of the GPU. Additionally, it was revealed that many of the features that were talked about before launch were not actually used, especially the Xbox’s RDNA 2 GPU features. Both the gaming industry and consumers are watching to see if advances in machine learning technology will bring about a true 4K 60FPS experience.
